THE SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS from the Scots Musical Museum This project, aimed at making more of the songs of Scotland's national bard more accessible, was started in Scotland with the recording of four cassettes by Scottish Records. These original tapes have been released as three CDs. My choice of songs for these was purely personal and somewhat arbitrary in that I was guided by melody as much as by anything else. Here are some of the songs contributed by Robert Burns to the Scots Musical Museum as printed by James Johnson in that collection (1787-1803). The research is that of Professor Donald Low of Stirling University and notes can be found in his definitive book The Songs of Robert Burns (Routledge Kegan Paul, 1993). FIRST FLIGHT Rounder Records 11556 This is a compilation of three early records on Elektra - Scottish ballad book, Songs of Love, lilt and laughter and Laddie, lie near me, all of which were brought out in the early sixties. Editing these three LPs down to one CD gave me the chance to impose the standards of my middle years on the choice of material of my younger years. I eliminated material that I had sung in Gaelic (which I don't speak) and some songs that I had come to regard as a little precious or too self-conscious for what I was trying to do at this time. There remains some lovely material and a very young voice. In subsequent recordings, the voice matures and the style of singing reflects changes in the instrument, in repertoire and in my reasons for performing. Dainty Davy The crookit bawbee Quiet land of Erin Inverey The gypsy laddie Gin I were a Baron's heir Wae's me for Prince Charlie Caller o'u The day we went to Rothesay Johnnie lad Lassie wi' the yellow coatie She moved through the fair Barbarry Allan Tae the weavers The kirk swaree Clerk Saunders Rantin' laddie Nicky tams Ploughboy,O O wert thou in the cauld blast Johnnie Cope Wee cooper o' Fife Jean Redpath, Vocals Lloyd Gough, Concertina Art Podell, Guitar Ralph Rinzler, guitar, banjo 1962/65 re-issued CD only 1990
JEAN REDPATH Philo Records 2015 I would recommend this recording to anyone who is less familiar with Scottish music. It is the result of a conscious attempt to present a sampling of Scottish, Irish and English material, both traditional and contemporary. It presents perhaps less of a language problem than many of my other recordings. Rambleaway I live not where I love Captain Wedderburn's courtship Ned of the hill MacCrimmons lament The terror time (Listen to recording sample) My Faithful Johnny (Listen to recording sample) The grey silkie Lagan love Lady Dysie Dancing at Whitsun (Listen to recording sample) Blackwaterside Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello CD 1975
SONG OF THE SEALS Philo Records 1054 A collection of Scottish material, all of which is traditional except the title track, a formal composition which, over the years, came close to being a trademark in performance. Poor rovin' lassie Polwarth on the green Highland Harry Muckin' o' Geordie's byre Mill o' Tifty's Annie The song of the seals Logie o' Buchan Dowie dens of Yarrow Davy Faa Johnny my man Birnie Bouzle/Johnny lad College boy Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello Jay Ungar, fiddle CD/Cass 1978
FATHER ADAM Philo Records 1061 Another purely Scottish collection, this recording will be of particular interest to the ballad lover, containing as it does five classic ballads. I have a particularly warm spot for the title song, which comes from John Forbes's Songs and Fancies (1666) It always seems to be my first choice when I find myself in soaring places with the desire to sing. Willie's rare Highland laddie Bonnie Susie Cleland The twa brothers Rigs o' rye A slee one Roy's wife o' Aldivalloch Jock o' Hazeldean The trooper and the maid Father Adam The shearin's no for you Sir Patrick Spens Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello Jay Ungar, fiddle Ken LaRoche, flute unavailable 1979
LOWLANDS Philo Records 1066 There is a mixture here of lyric pieces and three ballads offering a lighter choice to anyone looking for an introduction to the music. One problem in working with Scottish traditional music is that it is a solo tradition and a foreign language one. This means that vocally I work alone, although over the years some instrumentation has become associated with my recordings, particularly Abby Newton's cello. Clerk Saunders Who shall count for thee? Gallowa' Hills Mary Hamilton Faraway Tom Bonny at morn Rose of Allendale Riddles wisely expounded A wee bird cam' tae my apron Lowlands Lichtbob's lassie Lassie wi' the yellow coatie Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello Drake Mabry, alto recorder CD/Cass 1980
SHOUT FOR JOY Philo Records 1068 unavailable 1980

Have Thine own way Dry bones Lighthouse Land where we'll never grow old This world is not my home Harbour bells unavailable 1978
LADY NAIRNE Philo Records 1087 Carolina Oliphant, the Baroness Nairne (1766-1845), is responsible for a surprising amount of material which is still in the popular repertoire in Scotland. An incredibly prolific, talented and melodic writer, she went to great lengths to remain anonymous during her lifetime and has had little acclaim in the last 150 years for so many well-loved songs. My intention here was to see her get credit for such staples as The Rowan Tree and Will ye no come back again. Charlie's landing at Barodale Will ye no' come back again? White rose of June Caller herrin' The rowan tree The regalia The lammie Lass of Livingstane Lass o' Gowrie Land o' the leal Lament of the Covenanter's widow Laird o' Cockpen The auld hoose Strathearn Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello David Gusakov, fiddle Cass only 1986
A FINE SONG FOR SINGING Philo Records (USA) 1110, Greentrax (UK) CDTrax 032 This was a very deliberate effort to indicate that, although I am committed to the tradition, I feel that one should sing anything and everything that has lasting appeal. All but three of the tracks on this recording started life as poems. Not all of the poems are recent, but they have been set to music in relatively recent years. I will make you brooches Now the die is cast Captive song of Mary Stuart Capernaum Up the Noran Water The tryst Broom o' the Cowdenknowes Annie Laurie Broken Brook South wind Song of the wandering Aengus John o' dreams Rohallion Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello Jay Ungar, fiddle CD/Cass 1987 LEAVING THE LAND Philo Records (USA) 1131, Greentrax (UK) CDTrax 039 Eric Bogle's song set such a strong mood that it was easy to find companion pieces to develop the note of bittersweet nostalgia. The loss of love, life or liberty, whether it be temporary or permanent, is something that needs no explanation and with which we can all identify. I am struck by the fact that the stronger the emotion, the more powerful the melody. . . . or is that chicken-and-egg syndrome? Now I'm easy (Listen to recording sample) Hallowe'en Next time round Un Canadien errant Maggie The wild lass The snowgoose Leaving the land Last minstrel show (Listen to recording sample) Sonny's dream (Listen to recording sample) Scarborough settler's lament Jean Redpath, vocals and guitar Abby Newton, cello Alasdair Fraser, fiddle and viola Jay Ungar, fiddle and guitar Cindy Cashdollar, dobro Dick Kniss, bass CD/Cass 1990
SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS arranged by Serge Hovey In 1972 I had a letter from Serge Hovey outlining his ambitious project to publish and record all of the songs of Robert Burns, with Serge's own arrangements. It was my privilege to work with Serge for twenty years in the course of which time we recorded seven volumes of Burns's songs with settings ranging from piano and viola to full orchestra. Serge died three weeks before the sessions recording Volume 7 of the series.
